The following maintenance schedules list all of the routine maintenance specified by Volkswagen for the 1.8L, 1.8T 4-cylinder turbo vehicles for the 2004-2005 models, as well as the mileage intervals at which they should be performed. This information only pertains to the 2004-2005 Jetta, Golf and GTI models that poses the 1.8 liter turbo charged engine.
NOTE: The maintenance schedule list the service intervals through 105,000 miles (168,000 km). For continued service, repeat intervals listed from the first 105, 000 miles for remaining life of vehicle.
2004-2005 1.8L TURBO MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
The following maintenance procedures listed are considered VERY IMPORTANT. Failure to follow the schedule provided below will drastically decrease the life of your engine.
1. Engine Oil & Filter - Change engine oil every 5,000 miles.
2. V-Belt Replace - Replace the V-Belt (or serpentine belt) every 80,000 miles.
3. Spark Plugs Replace - Install new spark plugs every 40,000 miles.
4. Timing Belt Inspection - Check the timing belt every 20,000 miles.
5. Timing Belt Replace - Install a new timing belt every 60,000 miles.
6. Timing Belt Tensioner Replace - Install a new timing belt tensioner with every timing belt replacement, replace every 60,000 miles.
7. Fuel Filter Replace - Change the fuel filter every 20,000 miles. If replacing the fuel pump, make sure the fuel filter is replaced before the fuel pump is installed.
8. Engine leaks - Check for leaks coming from the engine every 20,000 miles.
The following maintenance procedures listed are considered IMPORTANT. Failure to follow the schedule provided below may decrease the life of your engine or vehicle.
1. WIW Fluid Check Level - Check the windshield wiper fluid every 10,000 miles.
2. Auto-Shift Lock Check - Check the auto-shift lock every 10,000 miles if equipped.
3. Brake System Check - Check the braking system every 10,000 miles for leaks, pad thickness, damage and fluid level.
4. Wheels Rotate Front to Rear - Rotate the tires from front to rear every 10,000 miles.
5. Battery Check Electrolyte Level - Check the battery electorate level every 10,000 miles.
6. Dust Pollen Filter Replace - Change the dust pollen filter every 20,000 miles.
7. Manual Transmission Check for Leaks - Check the manual transmission for leaks every 20,000 miles if equipped.
8. Automatic Transmission Check for Leaks - Check the automatic transmission every 20,000 miles if equipped.
9. Tires/Spare Check Condition - Inspect the condition of the spare tire every 20,000 miles, add air if needed.
10. Drive Shafts Check Boots - Inspect the drive shaft and check the condition of boots every 20,o00 miles.
11. On Board Diagnostic System - Check memory and for faults every 20,o00 miles. Erase fault messages once fixed.
12. Door Check Straps Lubricate - Inspect and lubricate the door straps every 20,000 miles.
13. During Road Test - Check every 20,000 miles. Check kick-down, breaking, steering, power systems, heating, A/C system and electrical sys.
14. After Road Test - Check every 20,000 miles.
15. Air Cleaner Replace Filter - Install a new air filter element every 35,000 miles.
16. Cooling System Check Level - Inspect the cooling system every 20,000 miles. Its recommended to check the radiator fluid every oil change.
17. V-Belt Check Tension/Condition - Check the condition and tension of the V-belt (or serpentine belt) every 40,000 miles.
18. Ribbed Belt Check Condition - Check the ribbed belt condition every 40,000 miles.
19. Front Axle Check - Inspect the condition of the front axle every 20,000 miles. Check dust seals on ball joints and tie rod ends. Check tie rods.
20. Check ATF and Differential Level - Inspect every 40,000 miles.
21. Headlights Adjust - Check and adjust the headlights if needed every 20,000 miles.
22. Exhaust system - Check exhaust system for leaks or damage every 20,000 miles.
23. Sunroof - Inspect the sunroof, make sure there is no debris on slide rails and lubricate the rails every 20,000 miles.
24. Automatic Shift Lock - Check the operation including park/neutral position switch every 10,000 miles.
25. Automatic Transmission - Inspect the transmission for leaks every 20,000 miles.
26. Power Steering - Inspect the power steering fluid level every 40,000 miles.
Go here if your Volkswagen cranks but won't start up or is having mechanical issues.
NOTE: Change the brake fluid every two years regardless of the milage.
NOTE: Air Bag System, check for function and damage after 4 years, 8years and every 2years thereafter.
